How will dog license renewals happen in 2010?

Renewals for 2010 Dog Licenses will not be sent out in November, as in previous years.

License Renewal Notices will be sent to each dog owner one month prior to the expiration month of their current dog license.

If the rabies expiration date is:

Owners must provide a new rabies certificate or indicate they no longer have the dog.  They can purchase a 1, 2 or 3 year dog license concurrent with the expiration of the new rabies certificate.

2010 Owners may purchase a 1 year license that will expire in 2010.
2011 Owners may purchase a 1 or 2 year license that will expire in 2010 or 2011.

    4) Upon receipt of payment of dog license tax, a permanent dog tag will be issued for each dog being licensed.

    5) Dog owners who have a current rabies certificate and do not have a current dog license will have to purchase a new dog license.  This license will expire in 2009 concurrent with the month and day the rabies vaccination expires.

    6) Dog owners who have a current dog license and their rabies certificate expired prior to 2009, must provide a new rabies certificate or indicate that they no longer have the dog. Owners may purchase a 1, 2, or 3 year dog license to coincide with their new rabies certificate expiration date.

Animal Care and Control Dog Licenses and Vaccinations

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires Loudoun County to require all dogs four (4) months of age and older to be licensed. Beginning in 2009, the county will issue dog licenses to run concurrently with the rabies vaccination effective period for each individual dog.

What if I am a new resident of Loudoun County?

The county will also issue permanent tags to remain with the dog for its lifetime (replacement tags are available if needed). All dogs must have a license tag securely attached to a collar and worn whenever the dog is off of the owner’s property. A Loudoun County dog license may be obtained upon presentation of a valid rabies certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian. All dogs and cats over four months old must have a current rabies vaccination, and veterinarians are required by Virginia State code section 3.2-6529 to provide the Treasurer's Office with a copy of all canine rabies vaccination certificates.

Citizens have the option to purchase dog licenses for one, two or three year periods provided that the rabies certificate is valid for the period of time being covered. The cost is $10.00 per dog per year, regardless of spay/neuter status. Dog licenses may be purchased at the Animal Shelter, the Treasurer’s Offices in Leesburg and Sterling, or by mail.
